With a relaxed and informal setting\, these conversations provide a deeper understanding of the works the artists bring to life on stage\, making each event a memorable encounter with the people behind the music. \nEkaterina Gubanova (2025: Kundry in Parsifal\, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde; Venus in Tannhäuser 2019-24) is acknowledged as one of the leading mezzos of our days. Born in Moscow she first studied piano before being trained as an opera singer at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire\, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and as a member of the Young Artists Program at the Royal Opera House in London. Since then\, she regularly guests at the major opera houses and festivals worldwide\, such as the Metropolitan Opera New York\, the Lyric Opera Chicago\, La Scala in Milano\, the Rome Opera\, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden\, the Opera national de Paris\, the Vienna State Opera\, the Bavarian State Opera\, the Berlin State Opera\, the Hamburg State Opera\, the Bolshoi Theatre\, the Mariinsky Theatre\, the Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona\, the Teatro Real Madrid as well as the Bayreuth festival. \nThe 2024/25 season sees Ekaterina Gubanova in new productions of Das Rheingold (Fricka) at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich\, and Rusalka (Foreign Princess) at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Born and raised in the Ozarks in an extremely musical family\, he has been celebrated in the world’s most prestigious international opera houses\, festivals and concert halls. Acclaimed in the widest range of repertoire\, he has tackled every genre from Baroque to Classical to 20th century music\, while firmly establishing himself as an expert within the Bel Canto\, Romantic\, and French Grand Opera genres. SUMMARY:Parsifal: Sources and Mythologies: a Talk with Thomas Launius
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the origins and evolution of the Grail Legends\, beginning with their first written form in the late 12th and early 13th centuries\, created as a response to the early decline of Christianity in Europe. We’ll then examine how these legends resurfaced between 1775 and 1900\, during a time of social upheaval and the rise of German cultural identity\, inspiring new artistic and psychological interpretations. The ancient tradition of Storytelling in Europe\, both in its original oral form and then later as written\, understood that a Storyteller never “created” a story\, but rather\, inherited it\, and then it was their sacred responsibility to be faithful to that original inheritance while at the same time developing it to speak authentically to a new generation. Turning towards Wagner’s Parsifal\, we will explore some of the ways Wagner adapted and shaped the material he inherited and how the final result has its own special message. \nAbout the speaker: Thomas Launius was born into a military family and spent his early years living in England\, Germany\, Japan\, and the United States. He came of age in Louisiana and earned a degree in Physics from Louisiana State University\, along with a minor in Vocal Performance. Trained as a tenor\, he sang in university and regional opera productions for five years before turning to the academic study of story and symbol. He later earned a doctorate in Mythology and spent over three decades as a professional storyteller and speaker. \nIn 2017\, Thomas fulfilled a lifelong dream by relocating to Bavaria\, not far from Munich. Since 2019\, he has worked as a professional tour guide\, specializing in historically rich and mythologically resonant experiences throughout Munich\, Salzburg\, and especially Neuschwanstein Castle—the fairytale fortress built by King Ludwig II as a tribute to Richard Wagner. Drawing on his background in mythology\, music\, and narrative craft\, Thomas creates immersive tours that bring to life the operatic vision behind the castle’s creation and illuminate the deep connections between Wagner’s works and the cultural landscape of Bavaria. \nThis discussion will be followed by an extended audience Q&A and discussion session.

He studied singing\, Lied interpretation and conducting with Rudolf Piernay\, Irwin Gage and Klaus Arp in Mannheim and Saarbrücken and enhanced his education in master classes held by Charles Spencer\, Cornelius Reid and Rudolf Piernay. Michael Nagy became an ensemble member of the Komische Oper Berlin before moving on to Frankfurt Opera\, where he was able to develop his repertoire in roles such as Paragon (The Magic Flute)\, Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro)\, Wolfram (Tannhäuser)\, Valentin (Faust)\, Prince Yeletsky (Pique Dame)\, Marcello (La Bohème)\, Albert (Werther)\, Frank/Fritz (Die tote Stadt)\, and Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus). \nHis 2024-25 concert season offered a wide repertoire with performances including Arnold Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder and Schoenberg’s Jakobsleiter under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher at the Elbphilharmonie. Join us in a panel discussion discussing this work in context with those who attended the Festival\, examining how the musical and dramatic interpretation reframe Meistersinger within today’s cultural landscape\, sparking debate about tradition\, innovation\, and Wagner’s enduring relevance. \nWe’ll begin with insights from our two scholarship winners\, who will share their experiences attending the Festival this summer. The program continues with a panel discussion on the new Meistersinger von Nürnberg production: a staging by Matthias Davids that has sparked widespread conversation. The conversation will examine what makes a production “Wagnerian\,” how effective the comedy is across text\, music\, and staging\, and how technologies like Live-in-HD and streaming are reshaping opera today. Panelists include Jillian Murray\, Griffin Kaiser\, and Sanford Schwartz. This event is designed to spark thoughtful debate about tradition\, innovation\, and Wagner’s enduring relevance. Ample time will be devoted to audience Q&A and discussion\, allowing members to add their voices and perspectives. \nThe event will be followed by a social hour with refreshments. \nLivestream: the event will be livestreamed (viewable up to 36 hours after the start of the event). With a relaxed and informal setting\, these conversations provide a deeper understanding of the works the artists bring to life on stage\, making each event a memorable encounter with the people behind the music. \nMichael Volle‘s exceptional vocal talent and powerful stage presence have established the German baritone as one of the most sought-after singers of his generation. Inspired by his teachers Josef Metternich and Rudolf Piernay\, he has conquered the stages of the world’s most prestigious opera houses as a heroic baritone\, while never losing his passion for the more intimate concert and song repertoire. \nAfter early engagements in Mannheim\, Bonn\, Düsseldorf\, and Cologne\, he became a member of the ensembles at the Zurich Opera House and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich\, where the foundation was laid for an acclaimed international career. This career has since taken him as a guest artist to all major international opera stages\, including the opera houses in Berlin\, the State Operas of Hamburg\, Dresden\, Munich\, and Vienna\, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden\, the Opéra National de Paris\, London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden\, the Teatro Real in Madrid\, the Liceu in Barcelona\, La Scala in Milan\, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York\, as well as to the Bregenz\, Salzburg Festivals\, and the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. \nMichael Volle has earned particular renown as an interpreter of Richard Wagner’s works. Among his most important roles are Wotan/Wanderer in Wagner’s Ring Cycle and Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In addition\, the roles of Richard Strauss and the major baritone parts of the Italian repertoire\, especially those by Giuseppe Verdi\, form a central focus of his artistic work. In the 2024/25 season\, he appeared in new productions of Rheingold\, Walküre\, and Siegfried at La Scala in Milan (directed by David McVicar)\, where the Ring has been completed in the 2025/26 season with two complete cycles. The Vienna State Opera also remains a regular fixture in his calendar; this season he appeared there in two Ring cycles. In November 2025\, he returned to the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden in the title role of Falstaff\, having already appeared there as Wotan/Wanderer in September 2025\, and he took on the role of Mandryka (Arabella) at the Zurich Opera House. Under the title “RING 10010110\,” Richard Wagner’s music drama and its reception history take center stage—through a visual level that is constantly changing\, expanding\, recomposing\, and contradicting itself. For the first time in the history of the festival\, artificial intelligence will play live on stage – not as a character\, but as an imaging force.” These intimate sessions offer audiences a rare glimpse behind the scenes as artists reflect on their careers\, share insights into their roles and creative processes\, and discuss the unique experience of performing at Bayreuth. With a relaxed and informal setting\, these conversations provide a deeper understanding of the works the artists bring to life on stage\, making each event a memorable encounter with the people behind the music. \nAs Director of the Dortmund Academy\, Marcus Lobbes is in high demand locally\, nationally\, and internationally for lectures and panel discussions; he is particularly committed to fostering and promoting a wide variety of networks in the performing arts\, as well as communicating artistic research — in dialogue with the latest technologies — to theater and educational institutions\, policymakers\, and the general public. \nHe is also active on numerous committees\, boards of trustees\, and juries; for example\, since 2024 he has served as vice president of the German Academy of Performing Arts and as a member of the board of trustees of the Performing Arts Fund. \nSince 1995\, he has worked as a director\, set designer\, and writer in musical and spoken theater. His focus is on uncompromisingly contemporary adaptations of classics as well as numerous world premieres and first performances at many renowned theaters across Germany in over 80 productions to date\, including at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus\, the Frankfurt Opera\, the Hamburg Opera\, the National Theater Mannheim\, the State Theaters in Kassel\, Mainz\, Saarbrücken\, Darmstadt\, and Braunschweig\, the Schauspiel Dortmund\, the Theater Freiburg\, and the Wuppertaler Bühnen. \nHis artistic signature is characterized by innovative forms of collective work with ensembles and his close collaboration with contemporary writers and composers. In this opening session\, mythologist and storyteller Dr. Thomas Launius applies the tools of the Historical-Critical Method to Wagner’s 1877 libretto\, tracing the specific decisions Wagner made in transforming characters\, compressing settings\, and fundamentally reconceiving the Grail itself. What emerges is not just a source comparison\, but a portrait of a composer working as a mythmaker — selectively suppressing\, amplifying\, and reinventing his medieval inheritance to produce something that exceeds its sources in every direction. Listeners familiar with the opera will find the work defamiliarized in productive ways; those new to the medieval tradition will discover that Wagner’s Parsifal is\, among other things\, a brilliant act of creative concealment. \n\n\nAfternoon Session: You Become What You Reject — How Wagner Built the Structure and Brought the Fire \n\n\nHaving dismantled Wolfram von Eschenbach’s medieval epic\, Wagner faced a formidable challenge: what he had left lacked structure and momentum. In this afternoon session\, Dr. Thomas Launius uses the Historical-Critical Method to reveal how Wagner reached into the deep riches of the European fairy tale tradition. Drawing on ancient narrative patterns\, Wagner found the structural spine and the energetic engine his opera required. The result is a work of extraordinary compositional intelligence — one in which a single bewitched figure connects every character in the drama\, and a single moral test is deployed four times with escalating intensity\, each more demanding than the last. And a delicious irony is revealed: in the very act of rejecting Wolfram\, Wagner became more like Wolfram than Wolfram himself ever could have been. \n\n\n\nThomas Launius was born into a military family and spent his early years living in England\, Germany\, Japan\, and the United States. He came of age in Louisiana\, earning a degree in Physics from Louisiana State University alongside a minor in Vocal Performance. Trained as a tenor\, he sang in university and regional opera productions for five years before turning to the academic study of story\, symbol\, and myth. He later earned a doctorate in Mythology and spent over three decades as a professional storyteller\, speaker\, and mentor working at the intersection of narrative\, meaning\, and human transformation. \n\n\nIn 2017\, Thomas fulfilled a lifelong dream by relocating to Bavaria\, not far from Munich. Since 2019\, he has worked as a professional tour guide specialising in historically rich and mythologically resonant experiences throughout Munich\, Salzburg\, and especially Neuschwanstein Castle — the fairytale fortress built by King Ludwig II as a living tribute to Richard Wagner and his operas. \n\n\nHis encounter with Wagner through Neuschwanstein opened into a sustained scholarly engagement with Wagner’s work\, and particularly with Parsifal. Applying the Historical-Critical Method — the rigorous interpretive framework developed by German biblical scholars and since extended across literary and cultural analysis — Thomas brings source criticism\, redaction criticism\, and social-historical analysis to bear on Wagner’s libretto\, situating the opera within the full depth of its medieval sources\, its 19th-century intellectual context\, and its ongoing challenge to 21st-century audiences. His work draws on the mythological scholarship of Paul Ricoeur\, Max Lüthi\, and Joachim Kaiser\, among others\, and is animated by the conviction that genuine critical understanding deepens rather than diminishes our encounter with great art. \nThomas is a member of the Munich Wagner Society — the München Wagner Verband\, the second oldest Wagner Society in the world — and lectures to Wagner Societies internationally. \n  \nThis in-person-only event will take place at the Arvena Kongress Hotel in Bayreuth\, Germany. \nTickets are $25 in advance online. DESCRIPTION:The Wagner Society of New York is happy to organize a tour for our members of the Wagnerzimmer. \n\n\nThis event is only open to Wagner Society Members – either the Wagner Society of New York or another Wagner Society. \n\nWhen the Wagner family moved to Bayreuth in April 1872\, their first residence was in nearby Donndorf: the Hotel Fantaisie\, located in the immediate vicinity of Fantaisie Palace and its park. Richard Wagner moved into the rooms on the top floor of the hotel\, later known as the “Wagnerzimmer\,” on April 27\, 1872\, for a period of five months.\n\nToday\, the “Wagner Room” is a place of remembrance and encounter. Through private initiative\, the rooms have been restored to their original condition as far as possible. The original furniture has also been returned to its original place. \n \n\nThe tour will begin at 11:00am at the Wagnerzimmer outside the Hotel Fantaisie (Bamberger Strasse 5\, 95488 Eckersdorf). \nFor those interested in journeying to the Wagnerzimmer as a group via public transportation\, a WSNY representative will guide a group of members from the Bayreuth ZOH (95444 Bayreuth) Bus station beginning at 10:20am.  \n\n\nTravel options:\n\n\nGroup Travel by Public Transit: \nFor those wanting to travel by group\, Johannes Fischer\, a Wagner Society of New York representative\, will guide members to the Wagnerzimmer via public transportation. For those interested\, we will take the 10:30 375 bus from the Bayreuth ZOH station to Eckersdorf.\n\n\nPlease arrive by 10:20 to allow for flexibility should the bus arrive a little later or earlier.  We will not wait for any late arrivals. A one way ticket will cost around 3 euro. Tickets can be purchased via the Deutsche Bahn website or app. \nIndividual Travel by Public Transit: Want to get to Donndorf earlier and explore? You can take busses: 373 (Direction: Oberwaiz Am Schnapper\, Eckersdorf); 375 (Direction:Bruck\, Eckersdorf); or 396 (Direction: Gasthof Zur Post\, Gößweinstein) to the stop Donndorf Hotel Fantaisie\, Eckersdorf. \n\n\nBy Car: Travelling by private car or taxi? The Wagnerzimmer’s address is Bamberger Strasse 5\, 95488 Eckersdorf. To order a Taxi\, it is advised to call more than an hour ahead of time to arrange your travel.
