The city is virtually without government and sinks into chaos; the Pope\, the only moral and spiritual authority\, is in exile in Avignon. Cola di Rienzi\, a papal notary and educated man of letters\, rises up against the tyrannical noble factions after his younger brother is brutally murdered. \nAt first\, Rienzi wins the support of the Roman people and of the Church and is appointed Tribune. He befriends Adriano\, the son of the noble Colonna family\, who is in love with Rienzi’s sister Irene\, and vows to free Rome from the tyranny of the nobility and to establish an idealistic republic of freedom\, unity\, and justice\, in which only the law prevails and all are equal before it. The Colonnas and Orsinis refuse to accept this; an attempt on Rienzi’s life\, however\, fails. At the urging of Rienzi’s sister Irene and her beloved Adriano\, Rienzi pardons his enemies. \nThe nobles nevertheless continue to plot his downfall and return with an army. Rienzi leads the Roman citizens to victory—but at a terrible cost. His idealism turns into hubris\, and despite his triumph he loses the support of his followers\, of the people\, and above all of the Church. Adriano also turns away from him. Only Rienzi’s sister remains loyal to her brother and to the ideal of a new Rome. Both are besieged in the Capitol\, which is set ablaze by the Roman populace. Even Adriano can no longer save them. \n\n\nAbout this Version: \nThe Bayreuth version for 2026 argues that\, had a “final version” been created around 1871\, Rienzi would certainly have found its place in the Bayreuth canon of works “from The Flying Dutchman onwards”. For the ten works of the so-called “Bayreuth canon” are not based on a will or authoritative formulations in the foundation deed of the Richard Wagner Foundation Bayreuth\, but exclusively on passages from Wagner’s letters to King Ludwig II of Bavaria from 1882.  \nThe team has strived for a version that has considered the aforementioned layers of tradition as carefully as the history of reception. Likewise\, the Rienzi philology of recent decades has been meticulously taken into account. Furthermore\, the team has attempted to uncover new sources and reconstruct parts of the score believed to be lost. \nForm and design naturally lead inevitably to the question of cuts and processes. In this\, too\, the team followed the musical dramaturgy just as Wagner’s – also later – self-assessments. When Wagner 1871 writes\, “they should see the fire in Rienzi; I was a music director and wrote a great opera; that this music director has given them such nuts to crack afterwards\, that should surprise them”\, one notices the value of this “fire”\, which for the later “nuts” was just as indispensable as “every finale like a frenzy\, a drunken nonsense of suffering and joy” (1878). But also self-critical things\, like the “emptiness that one screws on when one can’t think of anything.” (1879) was taken into account in the version for 2026. Not only a comprehensible sequence of the plot lines was important to the team\, but also the internal structure of the individual musical numbers. Here\, too\, the “unhealthy” relationship between Rienzi and his sister Irene plays an essential role. Not only because it refers to the later incest constellation in the Walküre\, but also because it is fundamental to the emotional – and thus musically formed – triangle story Rienzi-Irene-Adriano. For the directorial concept\, the question was therefore before their eyes where Wagner musically explored the psychology and emotionality of the characters in their depth. It seemed more important to investigate what politics does to people and not the other way around\, and where the music-dramatic treatment of these questions can be found in the score. These emotional constellations – against a background of political history – are what generate the outstanding quality of the individual numbers and scenes in the first place. \nEven if Wagner had only written Rienzi\, the opera is a unique masterpiece sui generis\, which would have found its place in the genre history of European musical theater even without the authorship of the later Bayreuth master. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Experience: Two 30-minute intermissions allow for a break between acts. SUMMARY:Anton Seidl: A Fictional Tale
DESCRIPTION:The Disciple: A Wagnerian Tale of the Gilded Age\, is a prequel to Joseph Horowitz’s previous novel The Marriage: The Mahlers in New York (2024). Cloaked in mystery\, Anton Seidl materialized in the New World as Richard Wagner’s personal emissary in 1885. His appeal to Gilded Age women\, who identified with Wagner’s strong female protagonists\, was magnetic. In Brooklyn\, Laura Langford’s Seidl Society presented summertime Seidl concert on Coney Island (as many as 14 times a week). Seidl’s Manhattan friends – including Antonin Dvorak\, whose Symphony no. 9 in E minor\, “Fromm the New World\,” he conducted at its premiere – were legion. And yet he remained a man apart\, afflicted with secret sorrows. In Horowitz’s novel\, the main characters are Seidl\, Langford\, and the critic Henry Krehbiel.  \nAbout the author: Joseph Horowitz has long been a leading authority on the Wagnerism movement in the US. His Wagner Nights: An American History (1994)\, named best book of the year by the Society for American Music\, rescued Anton Seidl from obscurity. Prior to Horowitz’s extensive archival research\, next to nothing was remembered about Seidl’s historic Metropolitan Opera seasons or his summertime Wagner Nights at Coney Island. In all\, Horowitz is the author of fourteen books dealing with the history of American classical music. He regularly produces NPR “More than Music” documentaries. He has served as Executive Director for the Brooklyn Philharmonic (in the 1990s) and PostClassical Ensemble in Washington\, D.C. (which presented the first performance in more than a century of Seidl’s chidrens’ chorus “Good Night.”) As artistic consultant to the New Jersey Symphony\, he presented the premiere performance of Seidl’s synthesis of Siegfried act two. \nThe event will be followed by a social hour with refreshments. \n\nWSNY Members receive livestream link automatically by e-mail; no need to pre-register. SUMMARY:The End as Beginning
DESCRIPTION:Every work of Wagner’s maturity is unique and self-contained\, and yet Parsifal stands apart from the others. In a way\, the composer steps back from his world-changing musical innovations\, his constant dramatic and philosophical preoccupations\, and asks “suppose all that is now settled or transcended; what then?” The “stage-consecration festival play” is less a summation of his life’s work than the opening of a new pilgrimage that one life could never be sufficient to complete. \nAbout the speaker: Will Crutchfield has divided his opera career between conducting\, musicology\, and education. As Director of Opera for the Caramoor International Music Festival from 1997 to 2017\, he conducted over 30 titles by Rossini\, Donizetti\, Bellini and Verdi with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and soloists including Lawrence Brownlee\, Angela Meade\, Vivica Genaux\, Hao Jiang Tian\, Ewa Podleś\, Sumi Jo\, Jennifer Larmore\, Georgia Jarman\, John Osborn\, Michael Spyres\, and Hei-Kyung Hong. He has also held posts as Music Director with the Opera de Colombia (Bogota) and Principal Guest Conductor of the Polish National Opera (Warsaw)\, and has made guest appearances with many theaters\, including the Rossini Opera Festival (Pesaro)\, the Canadian Opera Company\, the Washington National Opera\, and the Minnesota Opera among others. For Ricordi and the Fondazione Rossini he prepared the critical edition of Aureliano in Palmira\, also conducting the production at Pesaro that won first place as “Best Rediscovered Work” in the 2015 International Opera Awards. In the same year he was named a Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation in recognition of his operatic work\, and in 2017 he was named as one of Musical America’s 30 “Movers and Shapers” for his leadership in innovative training and performance. In 2020 he was featured in The New York Times for his first-ever reconstruction of Beethoven’s sketches for the lost tenor aria from the1805 opera Leonore. His other reconstructions include Donizetti’s unfinished Symphony in E Minor\, the only known full-scale concert symphony by a major Italian composer of the 19th century. DESCRIPTION:In May 2027\, the Metropolitan Opera will present Wagner’s Parsifal\, his final music drama and one of the most searching works in the operatic repertoire. Since its premiere in 1882\, Parsifal has fascinated audiences with its extraordinary fusion of ritual\, symbolism\, philosophy\, and musical invention. This course explores the work from multiple perspectives\, beginning with its literary and religious sources\, the creation of the libretto\, and the circumstances of its composition. Particular attention will be given to Wagner’s use of leitmotif\, orchestral color\, and harmonic language to create a drama of spiritual struggle\, compassion\, temptation\, and redemption. The course will also consider the reception of this complex and controversial work\, its influence on later composers\, and the challenges of staging an opera whose action unfolds as much inwardly and symbolically as it does theatrically.
