For this event\, Swann will give his talk from the piano\, illustrating key musical passages by playing them live at the keyboard. \nThe author\, Jeffrey Swann\, brings extraordinary expertise to the project. A celebrated American pianist and internationally renowned Wagner scholar\, Swann has performed and lectured widely—from solo recitals with top orchestras in the U.S.\, Europe\, Latin America and Asia\, to lecture‑recitals at the Bayreuth Festival and numerous Wagner Society events. SUMMARY:Five-Part Course: Wagner's Tristan und Isolde
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 2026\, the Metropolitan Opera will unveil a new production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde; we offer this course\, taught by John J. H. Muller IV\, Faculty Emeritus\, The Juilliard School\, to enhance our members’ understanding and appreciation of the work. \nSince its premiere in 1865\, Tristan has exerted an overwhelming impact on audiences. After hearing Tristan for the first time\, Bruno Walter wrote\, “Wagner was my God\, and I wanted to become his prophet.” To understand Wagner’s world of longing\, night\, and death\, we explore Tristan in a variety of ways\, starting with the sources\, the creation of the libretto\, and the genesis of the work. The primary focus of the course is on Wagner’s use of erotically-charged chromatic harmonies\, an orchestral web of leitmotifs\, and subtle orchestration to embody the inner\, psychological world of his characters and the overall musical drama. The reception of this challenging work is studied\, along with its extraordinary influence on later composers. We also consider approaches to staging Tristan\, a work in which almost nothing happens on the stage. Classes are illustrated with a variety of recordings and videos demonstrating different interpretive approaches to the work by renowned artists. \nThis course is offered in collaboration with Juilliard Extension. \nFive sessions: Tuesdays 6:00 – 7:30pm\, February 3 – March 10\, (no session March 3); in-person only \nAbout the instructor: John J. SUMMARY:Wagner/Brahms: Music\, Culture\, and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Wagner/Brahms: Music\, Culture\, and Politics: A comparative study of two paragons of 19th century German romanticism. \nThis lecture will explore the relationship between two figures who were arguably the most important German composers of the late nineteenth century. Although early on Wagner and Brahms had several positive interactions and even expressed mutual admiration\, the two composers became caught up in a broader culture war\, pitted against each other by their respective followers. In this conflict\, Wagner was often depicted as modern and progressive and Brahms as backward-looking and conservative. But their musical languages\, as well as their cultural and political values\, suggest the opposite may be the case. \nAbout the speaker: Walter Frisch is H. Harold Gumm/Harry and Albert von Tilzer Professor of Music at Columbia University in New York\, where he has taught since 1982.  He has also been a guest professor at the University of Freiburg in Germany\, Yale University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Pennsylvania and has lectured on music throughout the United States\, and in England\, France\, Spain\, Germany\, and China. \nProfessor Frisch is a specialist in the music of composers from the Austro-German sphere in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, ranging from Schubert to Schoenberg.  He has written numerous articles and two books on Brahms\, including Brahms and the Principle of Developing Variation (1984) and Brahms: the Four Symphonies (1996\, 2003).  He served as editor of the volume Brahms and His World (1990\, 2009) and was the founding president of the American Brahms Society in 1983.  He is the co-author\, with George S. Bozarth\, of the Brahms article in the second edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2000). Professor Frisch’s publications on Schoenberg include the book The Early Works of Arnold Schoenberg\, 1893-1908 (1993) and the edited volume Schoenberg and His World (1999).  He also edited and contributed to a volume on Schubert’s music\, Schubert: Critical and Analytical Studies (1986). His book German Modernism: Music and the Arts (2005) investigates the relationships between music and its cultural context in Austria and Germany during the period 1880-1915. \nThe event will be followed by a social hour with refreshments. \nLivestream: the event will be livestreamed (viewable up to 36 hours after the start of the event). WSNY Members receive livestream link automatically by e-mail; no need to pre-register. \nLocation: NOTE CHANGE: this event will take place in the Rehearsal Hall on the 7th floor of the National Opera Center\, to the left as one enters at reception.

SUMMARY:Wagner’s Artistic Influences: with Joshua Borths
DESCRIPTION:Richard Wagner provocatively changed the course of music\, drama\, and art throughout the twentieth century\, and his work continues to influence artists in the present. Since Wagner’s death in 1883\, much of the discourse surrounding him has focused on his artistic legacy. However\, Wagner was a man of the nineteenth century\, firmly rooted to a specific time and place. Tracking the ebb and flow of an artist’s influences and innovations brings great aesthetic enjoyment but focus on Wagner’s influences has largely been absent from the conversation. Using Wagner’s enigmatic autobiography\, Mein Leben\, as a starting point\, Joshua Borths will explore the artistic influences on Wagner\, emphasizing his art as a conversation between the old and new and discovering the foundations of his greatest music dramas. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Joshua Borths (he/him) is a nationally recognized stage director\, writer\, and dramaturg. Known for his creative and insightful productions\, Borths’s work has been lauded as “beautiful\, even poetic.” (Opera Today) Recently\, Borths directed The Flying Dutchman for Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO)\, and he returns in 2026 to stage a new production of Puccini’s Tosca. Other upcoming projects include productions for Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera\, Chautauqua Opera\, Calgary Opera\, Arizona Opera\, and Madison Opera. Recent favorites include Three Decembers (Pensacola Opera)\, Hansel & Gretel (Opera Montana)\, Il barbiere di Sivliglia (Arizona Opera). In addition to his directing work\, Borths is also the Director of Opera Theatre at James Madison University and Company Dramaturg at DMMO. As a writer\, Borths has written numerous children’s operas that have been produced across the country and seen by hundreds of thousands of students (OperaClassroom.com). He has also given over 500 lectures on opera history & literature\, and he has been a guest lecturer for the Triangle Wagner Society\, Wagner Society Manchester\, Wagner Society of Scotland\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Hear the future of Wagnerian singing: Our annual Singers Competition Finals will take place on Friday\, May 22. Our members are invited to attend the final auditions\, where they can be introduced to some of the most promising young Wagner voices from around the world. The Wagner Society of New York is proud to have supported young artists through grants and awards for over 30 years. Awards are funded by generous Society members who established the  Robert Lauch Memorial Endowed Fund\, the Ursula Springer Endowed Fund\, as well as The Fund for Singers\, and by those who continue to honor their legacy with their contributions. This year\, Finalists will be presenting excerpts from Wagner and other works of similar dramatic vocal character. Update: Our 2026 special guest judge will be Craig Rutenberg\, alongside Cori Ellison\, Tyson Deaton\, Deborah Surdi\, Ken Benson\, and Roger Malouf.\nLearn more about the Singers Awards and competition requirements  online here.\n\nFinalists: To be announced. Deliberations and Announcement of Winners will immediately follow.\n\nVenue & accessibility: Merkin Hall\, Kaufman Music Center\, 129 W 67th Street (betw.
