SUMMARY:From Boito to Berio: the Influence of Richard Wagner on Italian opera // Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The lecture will examine the influence of Wagnerism in Italian opera.  First used as a pejorative cudgel against the late works of Verdi\, it was explored in earnest through the experiments of Arrigo Boito and Franco Faccio. Through the verismo period\, and especially among the Giovane Scuola (Young School) composers\, Wagner’s music and dramaturgy became openly embraced. In the 20th century\, Italian composers continued to grapple with the implications of Wagner’s music. The late 20th century “azioni musicali” (“musical actions”) of Luciano Berio manage to synthesize some of the more radical aspects of Wagner’s philosophy in surprising ways. \nThis presentation will be preceded by a brief Annual Membership Meeting. \n About the Speaker: Anthony Barrese has earned accolades as both a composer and conductor in North America and Italy.  Mr. Barrese is the recipient of numerous composition awards including a NEC Contemporary Ensemble Composition Competition Award for his Madrigale a 3 voci femminili\, and two BMI Student Composers Awards. As a musicologist\, Mr. Barrese rediscovered\, prepared\, and edited the critical edition of Franco Faccio’s opera Amleto\, in conjunction with Casa Ricordi. As Artistic Director and Principal conductor of Opera Southwest he has conducted Rossini’s Otello with the American staged premiere of the “finale lieto\,” (happy end) and in 2014 he lead the World Premiere of Amleto\, not heard anywhere since 1871. He also notably led productions of Wagner’s Lohengrin (2019)\, a new world premiere of Bottesini’s Alì Babà (2019)\, and a company premiere of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (2021).  As Music Director of Opera Delaware he conducted the west coast premiere of Amleto in 2016\, and the company premiere of Rossini’s Semiramide in 2017. In the 2026 season he conducted a new productions of Andrea Chénier\, Boris Godunov (Opera Southwest)\, and Tosca (Opera Tampa). \nThe event will be followed by a social hour with refreshments. \n\nWSNY Members receive livestream link automatically by e-mail; no need to pre-register. Livestream/re-stream viewable up to 36 hours after the start of the event.

SUMMARY:Liszt's Tone Poems as Musical Realizations of Ideas from Opera and Drama and Their Influence on Wagner's Musical Language
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible that Wagner found in Liszt’s tone poems practical applications of theoretical concepts articulated in Opera and Drama (1849)? There Wagner argues that multiple changes of key—each possessing its own characteristic qualities and each related to the others—are necessary for the proper musical expression of poetic ideas. The combination of distinct musical sections\, or poetic-musical periods\, gives rise to an overarching poetic conception that forms the basis of an entire music drama. Only by coupling tonality with dramatic action and poetic intent\, Wagner believed\, could music as an art form continue to develop\, for without an extra-musical foundation the continued expansion of chromaticism risks leading to harmonic aimlessness. Liszt’s revolutionary harmonic language\, the resulting attenuation of the diatonic system\, and his treatment of form—especially the combination of several movements into a single whole—may represent the practical means by which these aesthetic ideals found musical realization. This presentation examines the techniques that distinguish Liszt’s compositional language from that of the First Viennese School\, considers their affect on tonal structure and form\, and explores their possible reflection in Wagner’s music dramas\, where they become inseparable from dramatic action and poetic meaning\, both before and after the Siegfried hiatus. More broadly\, it asks whether Liszt’s tone poems may have furnished Wagner not merely with new harmonic procedures\, but with compositional solutions to problems he had himself articulated in Opera and Drama. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Chris Park is a part-time associate teaching professor in the Techniques of Music department at the Mannes School of Music at The New School. Originally trained as a violinist\, he later studied Schenkerian analysis with Carl Schachter. He teaches courses ranging from freshman music theory to advanced analysis\, as well as seminars on Beethoven\, Wagner’s Ring\, Mahler\, and the nineteenth-century tone poem. Drawing on Schenkerian analysis\, his research explores the interaction of tonal structure\, musical form\, and extra-musical meaning in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century repertoire. His current work brings together three longstanding interests: musical form\, tonal structure\, and drama. Underlying much of his scholarship is a central question: How does tonal structure create or support musical meaning? His recent work on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony traces the long-range preparation of climactic moments in the Finale\, including one of particular social and political significance. He completed his dissertation\, Mozart’s Harmonization Exercises for Barbary Ployer\, in 1999. Park’s opera\, Phedra and Hippolytus\, based on Euripides’ Hippolytus\, was fully staged in Belo Horizonte\, Brazil\, in 2013. He is the reed organist at the New Boston Congregational Church in Sandisfield\, Massachusetts\, and the drummer for Otto’s German Band in Berkshire County. \nThe event will be followed by a social hour with refreshments. \n\nWSNY Members receive livestream link automatically by e-mail; no need to pre-register. SUMMARY:Five-Part Course: Wagner's Parsifal
DESCRIPTION:In May 2027\, the Metropolitan Opera will present Wagner’s Parsifal\, his final music drama and one of the most searching works in the operatic repertoire. Since its premiere in 1882\, Parsifal has fascinated audiences with its extraordinary fusion of ritual\, symbolism\, philosophy\, and musical invention. This course explores the work from multiple perspectives\, beginning with its literary and religious sources\, the creation of the libretto\, and the circumstances of its composition. Particular attention will be given to Wagner’s use of leitmotif\, orchestral color\, and harmonic language to create a drama of spiritual struggle\, compassion\, temptation\, and redemption. The course will also consider the reception of this complex and controversial work\, its influence on later composers\, and the challenges of staging an opera whose action unfolds as much inwardly and symbolically as it does theatrically. Classes will be illustrated with a variety of recordings and videos demonstrating different interpretive approaches by renowned artists. \nThis course is offered in collaboration with Juilliard Extension. \nFive sessions: Tuesdays 6:00 – 7:30pm\, March 30 – April 27; in-person only \nAbout the instructor: John J. H. Muller IV is professor emeritus in the Music Department at The Juilliard School and has given independent courses on Wagner and other composers. A member may request up to two tickets per performance. Once members successfully apply and pay the $100 fee(s)\, they will receive an automated email indicating that the request has been received. Your application fee guarantees that a request will be made on your behalf but does not guarantee tickets\, as this will depend upon what is allocated to WSNY. Ticket fulfillment will give priority to members who have not received tickets recently\, and then will be made in order of receipt of request and availability of inventory. Members who request tickets and receive an allocation\, but then fail to complete their purchase\, in addition to forfeiting their application fee\, may receive de-prioritized ticketing allocation for future Bayreuth or other special events. The application fee will be credited against your balance due for any tickets allocated to you. In case the majority of tickets requested by you are not allocated to you (e.g. if you request a ticket to four performances and receive an allocation to only two performances) and you choose not to purchase any of the allocated tickets\, your application fee will be refunded in due course. \nAllocation & Payment \nAllocations are expected to begin in Winter 2026-27. Once WSNY’s ticket contingent has been received\, if your request is able to be fulfilled\, you will be invoiced and you will have 7 days to make the balance payment online via credit card. Failure to pay will result in your ticket(s) no longer being allocated to you. If a ticket allocation is made for a majority of the tickets requested by you\, the application fee will not be refunded\, regardless of whether tickets are paid for. Please note that WSNY will invoice the tickets at the EUR-USD exchange rate to which it is subject at the time of purchase on your behalf\, and will add a 15% contribution to WSNY to the total ticket price. This contribution fee helps to support the work of WSNY. All sales are final.
