SUMMARY:'Mahler' (1974) - A Film by Ken Russell
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rare screening of Mahler (1974)\, Ken Russell’s audacious and visually stunning portrait of composer Gustav Mahler. Winner of the Technical Grand Prize at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival\, Mahler is widely regarded as one of Russell’s most stirringly imaginative films. Set during the composer’s final days in 1911\, the film follows Mahler (Robert Powell) and his wife Alma (Georgina Hale) on a train journey\, during which the story of his life\, loves\, and inner turmoil unfolds through a dreamlike series of flashbacks. Hale’s performance as Alma Mahler earned her a 1975 BAFTA (Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles). \nRussell’s signature style\, blending emotional intensity with surrealist imagery\, brings Mahler’s complex world to life: his struggles with antisemitism\, his painful family history\, his passionate yet strained relationship with Alma\, and the shadow of his declining health. Featuring powerful performances and a rich musical backdrop\, Mahler offers a deeply human and visually bold tribute to one of music’s great visionaries. Don’t miss this special opportunity to experience the film on the big screen with fellow Wagner and Mahler enthusiasts. \n\nProgram Change: This film replaces Hilan Warshaw’s ‘Mahler in New York’ which is under exclusive entry at a film festival and will be shown by WSNY at a later date.\n\nSchedule: Doors at 6:30 p.m.\, film from 7:00-9:00 p.m. followed by a social hour with refreshments.\n\nAccessibility: Venue is ADA accessible. Entrance is on 55th street at 6th Avenue\, next door to Pret à Manger. There are sidewalk cutouts on the corner and an accessible entrance.  Once through building security turnstiles\, the movie theater-style-seating venue is on the lobby level\, to your left. There are several stairs to the lobby level restroom but fully-accessible restrooms will be available by taking the elevator to another floor.

SUMMARY:Die Meistersinger in HD: Bayreuth Premiere
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, July 25\, 2025\, in Bayreuth\, Germany\, a bold new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will premiere—one of the most anticipated events of the Wagnerian calendar. This September\, we’ll bring the performance to midtown Manhattan in a stunning High-Definition re-stream at a modern screening room with immersive Dolby Atmos sound and crystal-clear 4k visuals. Experience the energy of Bayreuth’s opening night without leaving New York—no black tie\, no travel\, and yes\, air conditioning. \nSettle into plush seating and lose yourself in Wagner’s celebration of art\, tradition\, and individuality—reimagined by musical theatre veteran Matthias Davids and conducted by Daniele Gatti. This is not just another opera screening—it’s a front-row seat to a major cultural moment\, shared with fellow enthusiasts in comfort and style. \nDolby88 Screening Room \nAbout the production: Matthias Davids\, best known as the award‑winning director of musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar\, West Side Story and Sweeney Todd at German-language theatres like Düsseldorf and Vienna\, and — as artistic head of the musical division at the Landestheater Linz — has now taken on Wagner’s only mature comedy for his Bayreuth debut. Davids has said that his aim is to uncover the inherent humor in Die Meistersinger\, not to reduce it to buffoonery\, but to let those moments illuminate the opera’s loftier emotional truths — and he’s leaned deeply into Wagner’s own stage directions to craft a production that feels “plausible” to modern audiences. With Georg Zeppenfeld as Hans Sachs\, Michael Nagy as Beckmesser\, Michael Spyres as Walther\, and Christina Nilsson as Eva\, the work will be conducted by maestro Daniele Gatti\, who notably returns to Bayreuth after conducting Parsifal from 2008–11. \nEnjoy this unique performance opportunity and then join us later in the week for a panel discussion on the influence and impact of the work. \nPricing: $45 for WSNY members. If the event is full\, submit your name and e-mail address in the form below to be added to the waitlist and be notified by e-mail of any openings. SUMMARY:Parsifal\, Act II: A Film in Progress
DESCRIPTION:Parsifal\, Act II: A Film In-Progress \nWe present a special preview screening of the complete Act II of Parsifal\, from a new film adaptation currently six years in the making. This multimedia adaptation blends performance\, painting\, and dazzling visuals to bring Wagner’s last work to life for the big screen. \nDirector’s Statement: \nMy formal introduction to Richard Wagner was in 2018\, when I first saw the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Parsifal. Profoundly moved and aware that I had experienced something that far exceeded my own understanding\, I sought to make sense of what I had witnessed that evening. As someone who was not a musician\, singer\, or music theorist\, the most logical approach to this work seemed to be through my field of study: Filmmaking. \nIn the autumn of 2018\, my creative collaborator\, Anthony Miksad\, and I began the early stages of pre-production on this cinematic adaptation of Wagner’s final drama. Enlisting a team of talented artists and peers (as we were\, at the time\, both students at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn)\, we assembled a production crew that would work together to bring Wagner’s Parsifal to the big screen. Thanks to the assistance and generosity of the late Lady Valerie Solti\, we were able to reach an agreement to use her husband\, Sir Georg Solti’s\, 1972 recording of Parsifal with the Vienna Philharmonic as our soundtrack. After rigorous auditions\, we found a superb group of theater actors who would perform these roles in synchronization with the vocal and musical performances of this great recording. \n“Cruel one! If you now feel in your heart only the pain of others\, then you can feel mine!” – Kundry\, Act II\, Scene 2\, tr. by Derrick Everett\n \nParsifal is a story of characters who are desperately trying to make their pains known to one another. Overwhelmed by their own suffering\, they do not possess the ability to recognize the inner-wounds present in those around them.  \nHow were we to reflect this tremendous concept at the core of Wagner’s drama in our film’s own mise-en-scène? How could the world of Parsifal be adequately realized? If leaving behind an old way of being is the first step on the path to understanding\, then it seemed that Wagner presented us with a story of people moving from one world to another.  \n“Now I seek Him from world to world to meet Him once again.” – Kundry\, Act II\, Scene 2\, tr. by Derrick Everett \nThis adaptation presents the struggle of these troubled characters caught between these “worlds”. The set pieces are constructed from centuries-worth of paintings to create visual on-screen environments. As these paintings begin to transform around our heroes\, the boundaries of their reality begin to vanish to reveal a deeper\, more physical world around them. \nOver six years in the making\, our film still has a long road ahead in its production. We firmly believe that this preview screening of Act II will serve as an insight into how we are exploring the curiosities and questions found in Wagner’s Parsifal. \nGriffin Kaiser\, Director \n  \nIn-Person only at the Dolby 88 Screening Room\, 1350 Avenue of the Americas\nDoors at 7:00 p.m.\nFilm begins at 7:30 p.m.\, runtime 90 minutes\nFollowed by a social hour with dessert & refreshments \nAccessibility: Venue is ADA accessible. Entrance is on 55th street at 6th Avenue\, next door to Pret à Manger. There are sidewalk cutouts on the corner and an accessible entrance.  Once through building security turnstiles\, the movie theater-style-seating venue is on the lobby level\, to your left. SUMMARY:Film: Global Wagner: From Bayreuth to the World
DESCRIPTION:Documentary screening\nGlobal Wagner – From Bayreuth to the World is not a biography of Richard Wagner\, nor is it a musicological analysis of his work. This is a documentary dedicated solely to the world’s fascination with the man\, and an exploration of the question as to how such massive hype and world-wide cult following developed around this highly controversial artist. The film is a revealing feature-length study of life with Wagner’s legacy from one Bayreuth Festival to the next\, and we travel the world to meet devoted Wagnerians and those most intimately involved in commenting on and producing his work today. \nIn-person only. \nDoors at 6:30 p.m.\, film begins at 6:45 p.m.\, general admission seating. Runtime: 97 minutes.\nScreening will be followed by a social hour with refreshments. \nAccessiblity & Covid-19 Info:\nVenue is ADA accessible. \nDolby will not be physically checking vaccination status (or negative test) for screening visitors. In order to enter the Dolby facility\, you will be asked to acknowledge the following when checking in at our Envoy station: that all visitors are fully vaccinated against or have tested negative for COVID-19 within 24 hours prior to their visit; that you do not enter if you are sick or symptomatic; visitors must remain in designated areas within the Dolby facility and will follow all health and safety instructions provided by Dolby and your Dolby host.  Masks are *welcome* for all but not required. \nView the trailer:
