The Wagner Society of New York is a volunteer-led organization, and our success depends on members like you who share their time, talents, and enthusiasm. By joining a committee or volunteering on a project, you can make a meaningful impact on our programs, events, communications, and support for emerging artists while helping advance our mission of fostering appreciation for Wagner’s works. Volunteering is also an opportunity to develop new skills, gain hands-on experience, and contribute your expertise in a collaborative environment. Most importantly, it’s a great way to get to know fellow members, build connections, and play an active role in shaping the Society’s future.

Event Check-In

Description: Welcome members and guests at our events and help create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Greet attendees as they arrive, check them in using an app on a tablet or your own mobile device, and distribute programs and other event materials. You’ll also assist with door ticket sales for guests who haven’t prepaid using a simple app and tap-to-pay card reader. This role is a great fit for outgoing volunteers and anyone who wants to learn the names & faces of our membership!

Skills needed: Friendly and clear communication, customer service, basic mobile device proficiency, attention to detail, organization, and reliability. No prior experience required; training (15 min.) will be provided.

Time commitment: 60 min. per event

Merchandise Table Sales

Description: Help staff the merchandise table at Society events, selling books and merchandise. Process purchases using a simple tap-to-pay system on a tablet, answer basic questions about available merchandise, and help keep the sales area organized. You’ll also assist with managing lines for book signings and special guest appearances to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for attendees. This is a great role for members who enjoy interacting with people and may have some knowledge about current Wagnerian scholarship and literature.

Skills needed: Friendly communication, basic tablet and payment-processing skills, customer service, organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage lines and assist attendees in a courteous, efficient manner. No prior retail experience required; training (45 min.) will be provided.

Time commitment: 90 min. for select events

Frequency/Duration: Approx. 3 events per year

Hospitality/Refreshments

Description: Arrange refreshments for Society events by placing orders directly with vendors or coordinating catering orders, as appropriate for each venue. Follow venue-specific requirements and policies, monitor ticket sales to estimate attendance, and make recommendations for food and beverage selections. You’ll also track orders and deliveries to ensure everything arrives on time and is ready for guests. This role is ideal for organized planners who enjoy attention to detail and helping create successful, enjoyable events.

Skills needed: Organization, planning, communication, attention to detail, vendor coordination, basic spreadsheet or tracking skills, and the ability to manage timelines and logistics. Experience with event planning or hospitality is helpful but not required.

Time commitment: 1 hour per event

Member Communications

Description: Help prepare and proofread member email communications using Salesforce and Constant Contact. Research and collect information on upcoming concerts, scholarship opportunities, conferences, and other activities of interest to members, while also promoting Society events and selected programs from affiliated organizations. Review content for accuracy, clarity, and consistency before distribution, and assist with formatting and scheduling email updates. This role is a great fit for members who enjoy writing, editing, research, and keeping others informed.

Skills needed: Strong written communication, proofreading and editing, attention to detail, computer proficiency, research skills, and the ability to organize information clearly. Experience with email marketing platforms such as Salesforce or Constant Contact is helpful but not required.

Time commitment: ~1 hour weekly

Frequency/Duration: Ongoing
